-Tasting Review
'Note that X is a whisky for cocktail.'
'Flavors of Lemon, Pear, Vanilla(+ Toffee), and Bitterness of Nuts'
Before unfolding the tasting review, let's take a look at the standard features of whiskies to make cocktails with. First, the cocktail whiskies usually put more weight on scents than tastes. A cocktail is an alcoholic drink that is a mixture of one or more liquors and other ingredients. If there is something lacking in a cocktail, one adds other ingredients or liquors. Thus, the whisky used for cocktails doesn't have to have the perfect balance of flavors so stressing one component is good enough. That's why it is meaningless to search for a good flavor balance in the whisky used for cocktails.
The aroma of X consists of lemon, hinted orange, pear, vanilla, malt, toffee, and astringent alcohol. Right after opening, the scents of vanilla & toffee arise and soon become faint, and one can find pear, accentuated lemon, and alcohol on top of those. A hint of orange shows up in the lemon and light malt in the pear. The orange and malt smell releases dimly as the nose becomes tired with alcohol. While smelling the whisky, scents of lemon and alcohol remain distinct.
The taste consists of light sweetness, nut's bitterness, and spicy. Moderate spiciness lingers to the finish with the first sip, which quickly decreases but keeps its weak presence for long. At the same time, pale sweetness and bitterness can be picked up. The bitterness takes the center of the taste and continues to the finish. The scent is way better than the taste, and the alteration of the flavor is minor. Also, there is no need to mention the finish because it is just an extension of the taste components.
The comparison between cocktail-based whisky and single malt is inappropriate. It is like comparing a mundane sponge cake to a fruit cake. Don't forget the whisky is for mixing. If not for the exaggerated official tasting note, the whisky seems to be well-made. But the whisky is not recommendable to those who don't like nut bitterness (unless one prefers the taste). Also, it is suitable for those who collect the Glenmorangie series.
