Before the review, I have concluded that the Glenlivet 12 is more fit for a cocktail base for many reasons.
During the tasting, the whisky's essential flavor alters. Before sipping, a light floral scent, and after swallowing, malt is the crucial component of the overall taste. Due to that, right after opening, the smell of pale malt and alcohol arises and then settles down.
In smelling, floral scent with a hint of grass and citruses can be picked up. However, except for the flower, the aromas of citrus and grass are subtle. Moreover, even the floral scent is moderate. Due to the overall fragrance's weakness, unless one intends to analyze the constituents of perfume, it is hard to recognize the details apart from floral.
After sipping, the centered flavor changes from floral to light malt. As the malt taste and light spiciness spread throughout the mouth, it affects the sense of smell. Because of the malt taste, the scents of citrus and grass turn faint. Frankly, it is impossible to pick up the flavors mentioned on the official tasting notes, apart from 'grass, flower, lemon, and malt.' But, it might be possible to find out the hidden flavors if one is extremely sensitive in taste and smell.
In personal experience, sweetness, floral, and fruit are usually essential flavors of light single malt whiskies. However, it is distinctive that the vital taste of The Glenlivet 12 is pale malt. Unfortunately, the malt flavor doesn’t seem to harmonize with others. And the disharmony of flavors might be offending.
Considering this, the Glenlivet 12 is more suitable for making cocktails, not for a neat or straight. It is better to choose more matured whisky in the Glenlivet for neat or straight.
